Jim, I think recession economics plays a part in people's choices and carpet protection is probably seen as slightly more superfluous to requirement than the usual products. It takes a stretch to expect people to buy an invisible product on faith and that faith seems to be earned now more than ever.

I think salesy pushing has had a defensive effect on most people at some stage or another, so pre-selling is vital now more than ever.

I have been hearing an increasing number of reports of over-wetting issues from solvent based protectors.

The issue seems to be that government regulations on VOCs over the last several years have led to protector formulations with less volatile and thus slower drying solvents.

This may be combined with over-application because a technician wants to be sure the coverage is thorough and he has applied enough protector to do a good job for his client.

The result can be an oily residue sometimes transferring to clothing if people use the upholstery before drying is complete, a solvent odor that lingers longer than expected and stiffness of the fabric.

Great article Jim. Any collaboration involving the knowledge both you and Lisa possess in the industry is going to be good. What pH testing method do you recommend for use when out doing quotes in client's home?
